Baseball News - Signed and delivered; Clement a Red Sock
![]() Matt Clement will join the Red Sox rotation behind ace Curt Schilling and newly signed David Wells. He went 9-13 with a 3.68 ERA with the Cubs in 2004. The baseball scene just keeps getting brighter and brighter, and even while the Evil Empire has reportedly acquired the Big Unit from Arizona, the defending champion Boston Red Sox are trying to keep pace, and they think the signing of workhorse Matt Clement will do that. The ex-Cub, who went 9-13 with them last season, joins his 4th major league club. He posted a 3.68 ERA in 30 starts, despite the below .500 record. He had one of the weakest run supports with the Cubs in 2004. Clement is expected to be the #3 guy in the Red Sox's rotation, behind Curt Schilling and newly signed vet David Wells. Tim Wakefield and Bronson Arroyo will round out the rotation at 4 and 5. Clement's deal is said to be a 3-year deal, in the range of $25 million, thus making around $8 mill a season. Over his 7 year career, Clement has posted a 69-75 record with a 4.34 ERA. Boston most recently added 3-time Gold Glover Edgar Renteria two days prior. Boston has had a busy offseason, already adding starters John Halama and David Wells, reliever Matt Mantei, and Renteria. While the signing isn't one that will put Boston "over the top", it is a solid acquisition, at a relatively cheap price tag. He is not Randy Johnson, nor is he Odalis Perez, but he is Matt Clement, and he will bolster the Red Sox's rotation. by Brendan Colameco on 12/17/04
