Baseball News - Big Unit to the Big Apple




The New York Yankees are very close to landing one of the most prized pitchers in all of baseball. Randy Johnson. Serious talks have been heating up with the Yankees, D-Backs and Dodgers. The deal includes L.A.'s Shawn Green, Yhency Brazoban and Brad Penny going to the Diamondbacks, Randy Johnson to the Yankees, and Javier Vazquez, Dioner Navarro and Eric Duncan to the Dodgers.


The only hitches are the physicals and no-trade clauses. The good thing is, the clauses should all be waived. Shawn Green's agent is now the owner of the Diamondbacks so there's no reason why he wouldn't waive it. The only other one is Johnson's and he's already said he would accept a trade to New York to play for the Yankees.


The deal came together yesterday when the Diamondbacks and Yankees talked for the second straight day and third time in four days. Each club chatted with the Cardinals and White Sox before settling on the Dodgers as the third team in the ring.


With the Cardinals, the names were Kiko Calero, Danny Haren and Rich Ankiel. The White Sox and Diamondbacks talked about a deal two weeks ago that featured first baseman Paul Konerko and John Garland.


Now, the Yankees' rebuilt staff looks like this: Johnson, Mussina, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright and Brown, if he isn't traded.


Next up for George Steinbrenner is securing free agent center fielder Carlos Beltran, who will likely command a seven-year, $105 million deal. The Astros and Cubs are the Yankees' main competition.
