Hockey News - Sorry hockey fans, no season this year
![]() It's a dark day for the sport of hockey and its fans. NHL commissoner Gary Bettman has announced that the NHL has rejected the NHLPA's counter-proposal, therefore putting an end to the NHL season. Though not officially announced, this meeting would either make or break the season, and it broke. The meeting held on Thursday was the NHL and NHLPA's first meeting since September 9th, 6 days before the lockout began. Currently, the lockout has lasted 90 days, and it is expected to last through Christmas until the NHL cancels the entire regular season and the playoffs. The NHLPA offered a 24% salary roll-back, which would greatly affect players like Alexei Yashin, Mats Sundin, and etc, but it would help out some of the game's future stars, such as Martin St. Louis and Pavel Datsyuk, as well, teams can take players to arbitration, and an increase in salary bonuses, lowering salaries. Bettman, an American citizen, has been commissoner since 1993. He has now been apart of both lockouts, and is in no way the right fit for the NHL. Some might say "Americans don't understand hockey", and they are right. At least, when it comes to Gary Bettman, they are right. He has left hockey, particularly the NHL, hanging by a thread in the US, the world's biggest market. The fans in Canada will come back, but Bettman is losing what is left of his American fanbase, and that is hurting the NHL. He is made for the NBA, and should have stayed there for good. It's time for hockey to get a major facelift, but that's only a huge understatement. by Brendan Colameco on 12/14/04
