Football News - Weis to Notre Dame & Willingham to Washington
Charlie Weis has been signed to be the Notre Dame head football coach. The deal is reportedly for six years paying him $2 million annually. Weis is currently the offensive cordinator for the New England Patriots. Weis graduated from Notre Dame in 1978 and is the first alumnus to coach the football team since Hugh Devore was interim coach in 1963. After beating the Bengals Sunday in Foxboro, Weis went to Notre Dame to meet his new players. He proceeded to tell his new team that we would be staying with the Patriots throughout the playoffs but would try to be with the team as much as possible. Athletic director Kevin White said the school's search committee had five formal interviews and spoke with two candidates about specific details. He said Weis was the only one formally offered the position. Tyrone Willingham takes the Head Coaching job at Washington Tyrone Willingham, former Notre Dame head football coach, agreed to take the head football coaching job at Washington. This choice by Willingham came just 2 weeks after he had been fired at Notre Dame. Willingham went 21-15 after 3 seasons at Notre Dame. Willingham is familiar with the Pac-10 being the former coach at Stanford and leading them to the Rose Bowl. The Washington Huskies are coming off a school worst 1-10 season after 2 years with now former head coach Keith Gilbertson. Washington athletic director Todd Turner met with another coach last week, Boston College's Tom O'Brien. When O'Brien withdraw on Friday for the head coaching job, Turner began interviewing with Willingham. by David Catterton on 12/13/04
