Football News - Heisman Winner of 2004


One of the most elite clubs in all of sports. Fewer members than any Hall of Fame. The Heisman Winners Club. Only 70 members as of last night. Very few people are allowed in this club. It doesn't cost any money to join, no money to remain a member. All you have to do to join, is play your heart out a full year. Only 5 college football players each year are nominated for this prestigious award.

The nominees for this year included Adrian Peterson, Matt Leinart, Alex Smith, Reggie Bush and Jason White.

There were two pairs of teammates this year, a rare occurence. Also, last years winner was nominated again. If Jason White were to win again, it would be the first time anyone has won twice since Archie Griffin of Ohio State. Adrian Peterson's second place finish was the best by a freshman ever. Jason White finished third Utah quarterback Alex Smith was fourth and Leinart's teammate Reggie Bush was fifth in the voting.

As a former winner, White had a vote. He said he put Peterson No. 1 on his ballot and Leinart second. The third spot he left blank and let someone else -- he wouldn't say who -- fill it out. White said he still doesn't know who that person picked.

In the end, all that matters is the winner. 2-5 and everything after that don't matter. So in the end, Matt Leinart came out the winner and is added as the 70th man to this prestigious club.
