Baseball News - Winter Meetings Roundup as of 12/12/04

Tim Hudson has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in return for right-handed pitcher Edwin Jackson and minor-league infielder Antonio Perez. The deal is expected to be finalized and announced by Sunday.

The Yankees have been busy signing pitchers. They recently signed Tony Womack to play 2B and Jaret Wright, but Wright failed his physical. He will take another physical this week. The Yanks have also reportedly signed Carl Pavano to a 4 year deal worth about $39 Million. Brian Cashman, GM of the Yankees, has been in meetings with agents of Pedro Martinez, Jaret Wright, Eric Milton and Matt Clement recently. If the Wright deal falls through, expect George and Co. to jump on Milton fast. A.J. Burnett could be next on George's list to revamp the Yanks pitching staff. Sources say a trade for Burnett would most likely include Vazquez, Brad Halsey and maybe even newly acquired pitcher Felix Rodriguez. This deal was also offered by Arizona for the Big Unit, the Yankees declined and plan to stop all talks with the Diamondbacks. The Yankees are also very close to acquiring a new addition to their bullpen from Japan.

The Mets have offered free agent Carlos Delgado a 3 year deal. They are also pursuing Richie Sexson and Moises Alou. The Mets also traded Mike Stanton to the Yankees, yet again, for Felix Heredia.

The Red Sox have been busy trying to keep one of their aces, Pedro Martinez. They are in a huge fight which has included the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Angels and even some talk over the White Sox. They have also signed former Yankee David Wells to a one year deal worth $8 Million. The Sox are also shopping around and eyeing St. Louis Cardinals All-Star free agent Edgar Renteria.

A 3-Way deal including the White Sox, Yankees and Diamondbacks was reported by the White Sox but was denied by just about everyone else. The supposed deal included the White Sox sending Carlos Lee to the Diamondbacks who would send the Big Unit to the Yankees who would send Vazquez to the White Sox.

The Philadelphia Phillies along with many other teams have kept a low profile at the Winter Meetings but the Phills signed former Yankee Jon Leiber and traded Felix Rodriguez to the Yanks for Kenny Lofton.

The battle for Beltran seems to be down to three teams, the Astros may resign him, the Cubs who would only sign him if they could unload Sosa, and of course, what would be a battle without the Yankees. George's unending wallet is probably one of the only teams that can afford the asking price. But George doesn't like the commitment of 10 years.

Some talks over Sosa have begun about him going to the Washington Nationals though it is nothing serious yet. The Kansas City Royals have also expressed interest in Sosa.

The Anaheim Angels seem to be in almost every big battle this Winter. They have supposedly signed SP Matt Clement to a deal worth about $7-9 Million dollars a season. Nothing is final yet though.

That just about wraps up everything from the Winter Meetins so far. Remember, all new free agent signings must be done by December 20, 2004 for the 2005 MLB Season. Expect teams to hurry up and sign the players they covet.
