Baseball News - Nomar re-ups with Cubs

Nomar Garciaparra will play for the Cubs in 2005

The Chicago Cubs addressed one of their biggest holes today. They re-signed 3-time All-Star SS Nomar Garciaparra to a one year deal, worth $8 million with an added $3m in performance bonuses.

Garciaparra was acquired at the trade deadline last season from the Boston Red Sox, who was one of Boston's longest-serving players, as well one of the most liked. In 43 games with the Cubs, he hit .297 with 4 HR and 20 RBI. In total, he had a .308 AVG with 9 HR and 41 RBI in 81 games. Over his 8 year career, Garciaparra has compiled a .322 AVG, 182 HR, 710 RBI, 86 SB, with a career OBP of .370 in a total of 1009 games. The Cubs were also looking at other shortstops, including Edgar Renteria and Orlando Cabrera, but in the end, they locked up Garciaparra for another year instead. The other holes in the Cubs' lineup consist of mainly the bullpen and the outfield. This will be Nomar's second Major League club. In addition to Nomar, the Cubs are also looking at other high-priced free agents, which include Jeff Kent and Carlos Beltran. Garciaparra was a graduate of Georgia Tech, and will play alongside fellow infielder Todd Walker, if the Cubs elect to re-sign him.

With the addition of Nomar for an entire season, perhaps the Cubs can finally end that dreaded World Series victory curse, which has lasted for an ugly 96 years. North Chicago's last World Series appearance has also been a long ways away.
