Baseball News - Bonds Unwillingly Used Steroids

According to the San Francisco Chronicle website, Barry Bonds testified to a grand jury today that he used a clear substance and a cream given to him by a trainer who was indicted in the BALCO scandal. The Giants slugger said he didn't know they were steroids.

Bonds testified that he used a clear substance and cream during the 2003 season and was told by his personal trainer, Greg Anderson, the products were nutritional supplement flaxseed oil and a rubbing balm for arthritis, both of which Bonds thought were legal.

"Greg and I are friends," Bonds reportedly testified. "I never paid Greg for anything. You're going to bring up documents and more documents. I have never seen anything written by Greg Anderson on a piece of paper. I never asked Greg" [about what the products contained]. When he said it was flaxseed oil, I just said, "Whatever." It was in the ballpark -- in front of everybody. I mean, all the reporters, my teammates. I mean, they all saw it. I didn't hide it."

Before testifying, Bonds was reportedly told he would not be prosecuted for any crimes he admitted under oath if he answered questions truthfully. However, he could be subject to prosecution for perjury if he lied.

Bonds is the biggest name in baseball. He holds baseball's single-season home run record of 73 and the is man who could break Hank Aaron's career homer mark of 755 as early as next year. Bonds ended last season with 703 homers and won his record seventh NL Most Valuable Player award.

Bonds could receive from a punishment from Major League Baseball, but the league did not have penalties for steroid use until last year.

On Thursday, the Chronicle reported New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi and his brother Jeremy told the grand jury they injected themselves with human growth hormones in 2003 and also used steroids for at least three seasons.
