Baseball News - Varitek staying put; re-ups with Red Sox

Jason Varitek was undeniably the most important part of Boston's World Series run in 2004, and he's coming back to try and do it again in 2005. This will be his 8th Major League season.

As Christmas is now just a few hours away, the Red Sox and their fans got an early Christmas present, in the form of Jason Varitek, who was re-signed on Thursday. A key component of Boston's World Series run, Varitek was has been locked up for 4 more years, for $40 million dollars, with Varitek making $10 mill a season.

Jason Varitek is the undisputed leader of the Red Sox, not to mention he was an intregal part of their World Series run. Jason hit .296 during the regular season, with 18 homers and 73 ribbees. He also set a career-high for OBP this past season, with .390. What's also astounding is that Varitek committed just two errors all season long. Two! That's a fielding percentage of .998. Where Varitek really hit his stide, though, was during the postseason, where he hit .245 with 3 HR and 11 RBI, and was a big reason why the Red Sox rallied from 3-0 down to beat the hated Yankees in 7 games. Other teams interested in Varitek's services were the Diamondbacks, the Blue Jays, and the Rangers, but in the end, he elected to re-up with the Sox. Though his career stats aren't staggering, Varitek is a steady, consistent player, with a great clubhouse presence. In 832 career games, Varitek is batting .271 with 97 HR and 418 RBI, with a fielding percentage of .995. This will be his 8th professional season in the Majors.

Unlike past World Series representatives, such as the Marlins and the Padres, the Red Sox aren't following those teams' philosophy of "alright, we broke the curse, once is good enough", as they are bringing back their most vital parts of their World Series run, and they have also corrected some of their other holes on their team. We don't say usually take the Red Sox over the Yankees coming into the regular season, but this year, I think it's safe to say we will be this time around, in 2005.
