Football News - Week 7 NFL Round-up
![]() Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee (10) kicks the winning 53-yard field goal out of the hold of punter Chris Hanson with 38 seconds remaining in the game against the Indianapolis Colts in Indianapolis. The Jaguars won 27-24. This week's NFL schedule brought some intriguing match-ups, and most certainly, some big upsets. Here is my round-up of the 14 games that were on tap: First, let's start off with the Dolphins absolutely embarrasing the St. Louis Rams 31-14. I mean, we all knew Miami would win a game some day, but I didn't think it would be so soon, or against a first place Rams team. Next, in a NFC West battle, the struggling Seattle Seahawks continued to go downhill losing 25-17 to the third place Arizona Cardinals, who are 2-5. Matt Hasselbeck was horrible, going 14-41 with 195 yards with 4 interceptions. He did throw a touchdown, but the 4 interceptions will certainly overshadow that. On the other hand, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, Emmitt Smith, had a good day, running for 106 yards with a touchdown on 26 carries. The upstart Jacksonville Jaguars surprisingly took out the Colts in a squeaker, 27-24, on a 53-yard field goal by rookie kicker Josh Scobee, who was injured on the game-winning play. Byron Leftwich was again outstanding, completing 23 of 30 passes, throwing for 300 yards with a pair of touchdowns. In a game that wasn't surprising for the team that won, it was surprising for the score and the history that was set in the game. Yes, I'm talking about the Atlanta Falcons, who's #1 rush defense got absolutely manhandled by Priest Holmes, Derrick Blaylock, and the Kansas City Chiefs, who both ran for a combined 229 yards on 31 carries with an NFL record 8 touchdowns. Michael Vick was brutal going 7-21, with 119 yards and 2 interceptions. In Cleveland, we saw the Browns almost take out the NFC's last remaining undefeated team, but they lost in overtime, 34-31, to the now 6-0 Philadelphia Eagles, who got another outstanding performance from first year Eagle, Terrell Owens, who caught 4 balls for 109 yards with 2 touchdowns. Donovan McNabb was equally as good going 28-43 throwing for 376 yards and 4 touchdowns. In other action, the New Orleans Saints beat the 2002 AFC Champions Oakland Raiders, in a 31-26 barn-burner. The Patriots won their NFL record 21st straight game with a 13-7 win over the now 5-1 New York Jets, the Packers won their first game at home this season in a 41-20 blowout over the disappointing Dallas Cowboys, the Chargers beat the Panthers in a defensive struggle 17-6, to go to 4-3, with last year's NFC champs falling to an ugly 1-6. Rounding out Sunday's action, the Buccaneers won their second straight game in a 19-7 victory over the Chicago Bears, who are now 0-3 when Jonathan Quinn starts the game. The Giants won 28-13 over the Detroit Lions, the Vikings continued to roll, shutting down the Titans, including Steve McNair, who was injured in the 2nd quarter, in a 20-3 romp, and finally, the Buffalo Bills continued to struggle, Buffalo dropped to 1-6 losing to the Baltimore Ravens 20-6. On Monday Night Football, the Cincinnati Bengals picked up their second win of the regular season, beating the then 5-1 Denver Broncos, 23-10. Chad Johnson, or should I say, Keyshawn Jr., played superb, with 7 receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown. Leading the way defensively for the Bengals was Brian Simmons, who had 8 total tackles with a sack. So that's Week 7 in the National Football League. Parody is becoming a common trend, moreso it already has, in the NFL, and that continued this week with the many of surprises. Week 8 should bring those same surprises, and maybe even more! by Brendan Colameco on 10/26/04
