Hot Corner - NCAA Football Second Half Preview
During the first half of the season, we have experienced some surprises as well as the expectations. Still, we all want to know what will happen in the second half and the postseason. Here's a sneak-peak: BCS Race There are four undefeated teams with a realistic shot at playing in the Orange Bowl for the National Championship - USC, Oklahoma, Miami and Auburn. Go ahead and write in USC and Oklahoma seeing that both teams' remaining schedules are very favorable, provided that Oklahoma doesn't over look Oklahoma State. BCS Buster This year, a bowl buster seems very possible. The BCS conferences don't each have two dominant teams, so there is room for an upset to slip into the BCS Rankings and become eligible for a BCS Bowl. Utah (6-0) is the front runner, but don't rule out Boise State (6-0). The Broncos only have one team left on the remaining schedule that is over .500 (Fresno State). The only problem is that Boise State might not rise high enough in the polls or have a strong enough ranking to qualify for a BCS Bowl. Dark Horse Wisconsin is very capable of getting into the Orange Bowl. The Badgers showed that they could win the big game this past weekend at Purdue. If Wisconsin can withstand Minnesota at home and defeat Iowa on the road, they could become the "Cinderella team" this year. Heisman This season has proved that Heisman talk should be held off until October. Matt Leinhart (USC), Cedric Benson (Texas) and Jason White (Oklahoma) received all the pre-season hype, but have been outplayed by lesser known players who are now frontrunners - RB Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma), RB/WR/KR/PR Reggie Bush (USC) and QB Kyle Orton (Purdue). All three took center stage in nationally televised games and are having outstanding seasons. Legendary Coaches John Robinson (UNLV) has already announced that he will retire at season's end. Who else will follow? Joe Paterno (Penn State, 2-4) is struggling yet again, but Bobby Bowden (Florida State, 5-1) and Lou Holtz (South Carolina, 5-2) got off to good starts. However, the Gamecocks have two powerhouses on their schedule ahead of them (Tennessee and Florida). If South Carolina falls in the second half, expect Holtz to step down. by Sam Panayotovich on 10/17/04
