Baseball News - El Duque headed to the Sox; joins Chicago

Orlando Hernandez will bolster already one of the American League's best rotations, consisting of two aces, Mark Buehrle, and Freddy Garcia, as well as Jose Contreras and Jon Garland.

Everyone calm down. El Duque will not be joining the defending champs. Instead, he is headed to the Sox -- the White Sox, that is, to join arguably the best rotation in the AL Central, that consists of Freddy Garcia, Mark Buehrle, Jose Contreras, and Jon Garland. He was signed to a 2-year, $8 million dollar deal on Wednesday.

El Duque posted a very solid 8-2 record last season with the Yanks with an ERA of 3.30. It was an injury rittled season, as he missed the first half of 2004. Before that, he missed all of 2003, his first and only season with the Montreal Expos, due to a torn right rotator cuff, before joining the Yankees in the offseason. Orlando Hernandez, who's nickname is El Duque, brings his 2 World Series rings to the South Siders, as well as his veteran leadership. Over his career, he has a 3.96 ERA with a record of 61-40 in 6 seasons, all with the Yankees. The only question mark with Hernandez is if he can stay healthy, because if he can, the White Sox signed him for a basement bargain price. He has only had one season in which he had started more than 25 games, and that was back in his sophomore season in 1999. Regardless of this, adding Orlando Hernandez to an already stacked rotation will certainly help sustain Kenny Williams' crew with a very dependable rotation. Williams recently filled one of his infield positions on Tuesday by re-signing Ben Davis to a 1-year deal for $1 million.

Not only is Orlando Hernandez going to help the White Sox's rotation, but he could also help end the Minnesota Twins' constant running away of the division. Kenny Williams still has some major holes to fill in South Chicago, though, as he still has two fifths of his infield missing. 2005 could be the year the AL Central sees some stiff competition for the Twinkies, and it could also be the year there is a new champion in the division.
