Baseball News - Ichiro Breaks Single Season Record
![]() The first two balls Ichiro Suzuki hit fair Friday night moved him to the top of the all-time single-season hit list. Suzuki set the major-league record for hits in a season Friday night, breaking George Sisler's 84-year-old mark with a pair of singles. The Seattle Mariners star chopped a leadoff single in the first inning, then put himself in the record book with a bouncer in the third. Those two early hits came off Ryan Drese, making Suzuki 10-for-20 lifetime against him. It was the 258th hit of the season for Ichiro, one more than Sisler had in 1920 with the St. Louis Browns. The historical baseball was taken out of play, fireworks above the left-field bleachers went off and Ichiro was congratulated by all of the Mariners and Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira. Ichiro tied Sisler's record in the first inning when he bounced a single over third baseman Hank Blalock's outstretched glove. That hit was Ichiro's 919th in his four seasons with Seattle, the most during a four-year period by any player in Major League history. Suzuki was the AL MVP and rookie of the year in 2001, his first season playing in the United States. He has also been a star with his defense in right field, winning three Gold Gloves in his first three seasons. by Sam Panayotovich on 10/01/04
