Football News - Who to Watch
![]() With a new football season brings new faces and new players to look out for, and I have assembled a list of players that you should pay close attention to, you Fantasy Football junkies. QB Jeff Garcia (CLE) - This former Pro Bowler still has some juice left in the tank. Now that he's out of the shadow of Terrell Owens, he can start fresh in Cleveland. He doesn't have the receivers he had in San Francisco in T.O. and Tai Streets in Cleveland, but Kellen Winslow and Quincy Morgan should suit him just fine. He's just as good taking off as Steve McNair. He's not a franchise Quarterback, but any team should be happy to have them. He has compiled a completion percentage of 62.5 through one week, throwing for 180 yards and rushing for 13 with a TD. HB Chris Brown (TEN) - 16 carries for 100 yards. That's an average of 6.3 yards per carry. Those are his numbers through one game! He's got the nod of Antowain Smith at the position and is a speedy, agile runningback. He's the type of guy with a great work ethic and a lot of potential. Taking him should leave no regrets. HB Onterrio Smith (MIN) - With most second year players, you would think a sophomore jinx applies. Not to Onterrio Smith. The Vikings HB had a huge Week 1 versus the Cowboys rushing for 76 yards on 15 carries with a TD on the ground, and in the air, which was made on his only reception in the game, 76-yard bomb from QB Daunte Culpepper. He averaged 5.4 yards a carry last season in 15 games with Minnesota, starting 3 of them, running for 579 yards. With starter Michael Bennett injured until Week 6, Smith should have a huge season. HB Lee Suggs (CLE) - In his rookie season with the Browns, he ran for 289 yards with 2 TDs on 56 attempts compiling an average of 5.2 yards per carry. He has pretty much run former first round pick William Green out of town, and should be an integral part of that Cleveland ground game. He's only got James Jackson behind him and Green, so playing time shouldn't be an issue with this kid. The future is now for Lee Suggs. FB Justin Griffith (ATL) - The Atlanta Falcons FB has a lot of Freddy Beasley in him. He's got the size, he's got the strength, and he's got the blocking and pass catching. And he's only 24 years of age. He's due for a huge season, and since he was fifth in receptions for the Falcons in 2003, there's no reason to believe he won't have a huge season. Let's not forget this is the same Griffith that averaged 4.4 yards a carry in 2003, which is very impressive from a FB. He was forth in rushing for the Falcons last season as well, trailing only T.J. Duckett, Warrick Dunn, and Michael Vick. TE Eric Johnson (SF) - This forth year man out of Yale has been plagued by injuries over the last two seasons, including an entire season spent on the IR last year. However, that was last year, and now it's 2004, and Johnson is already paying dividends for the 49ers. He has already made 8 receptions for 86 yards and a TD after just one week. Here's thinking, barring a big injury, he will have a huge season. LB Andra Davis (CLE) - He could be considered one of the biggest steals of the 2002 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons, he has 147 total tackles, with 5 sacks, 2 FFs, and 2 INTs. He's the Browns' best defensive player, who gets a ton of playing time, so he's a safe pick to take a chance a on. He can only improve from here on in. by Brendan Colameco on 09/15/04
