As the Colts were making their way down field with under a minute left in the 4th quarter, Willie McGinest sacked Manning for a 13 yard loss, which forced to attempt a difficult 48 yard field goal instead of 35 yards. Vanderjagt’s kick was wide right, and it allowed the Pats to hold the lead. NE 27, IND 24 Tennessee Titans @ Miami Dolphins Hurricane Ivan, like the Dolphins, failed to affect the Titans on Sunday. Tennessee intercepted the ball three times and one was returned for a TD by Lamont Thompson. Chris Brown made his first NFL start as Eddie George’s replacement and rushed for 100 yards on 16 carries. TEN 17, MIA 7 San Diego Chargers @ Houston Texans Drew Brees was 17 of 24 for 249 yards and two TDs. The Texans offense did its part for San Diego by committing four offensive turnovers. David Carr threw two interceptions and running back Domanick Davis fumbled twice. SD 27, HOU 20 Baltimore Ravens @ Cleveland Browns Jeff Garcia threw a 46-yard touchdown pass and ran for another TD in his Cleveland debut, and the defense held Jamal Lewis to just 57 yards after he ran for 500 yards in two games against the Browns last season. Cleveland also stole the spotlight from Deion Sanders, who came out of retirement and the TV studio for a chance to win another Super Bowl ring. Kellen Winslow had 4 catches for 39 yards in his NFL debut. CLE 20, BAL 3 Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears Bracy Walker returned a blocked field goal 92 yards for a touchdown and secured the Lions victory with an interception of Rex Grossman with 18 seconds left in the game. Thomas Jones rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns in his first game as a Chicago Bear. Detroit snapped a 24 game road-losing streak. DET 20, CHI 16 Buffalo Bills @ Jacksonville Jaguars Byron Leftwich capped an 80-yard touchdown drive with a 7-yard toss to rookie Ernest Wilford as time ran out, lifting the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 13-10 win over the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo’s Willis McGahee made his NFL debut after missing all of his rookie season last year recovering from a severe left knee injury. McGahee finished with 31 yards on nine carries and a catch for 12 yards. JAX 13, BUF 10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Washington Redskins Joe Gibbs won his first game in 12 years (125th regular season win, 141st overall). In his first game as a part of the Redskins, Clinton Portis rushed for 148 yards and one touchdown. The victory was the 500th in the 73-year history of the Redskins franchise WAS 16, TB 10 Arizona Cardinals @ St. Louis Rams Marshall Faulk rushed for 128 yards on 22 carries, but had to split rushing time with rookie Stephen Jackson, who finished with 50 yards on 7 carries. In his first year as starting quarterback for the Cardinals, Josh McCown was 18 for 29 with 181 yards. In his NFL debut, Larry Fitzgerald caught 4 passes for 70 yards. STL 17, AZ 10 Oakland Raiders @ Pittsburgh Steelers The Raiders showed off new defensive linemen Warren Sapp and Ted Washington, but the Raiders offense committed 4 turnovers. Rich Gannon fumbled once and threw two interceptions. Jerome Bettis rushed for 3 TDs on 5 carries but only gained one yard. Duce Staley, who took Bettis’ starting job rushed for 91 yards. PIT 24, OAK 21 Cincinnati Bengals @ New York Jets Curtis Martin had 29 carries for 196 yards and scored a rushing TD and a receiving TD. Carson Palmer threw for 238 yards in his NFL debut, but couldn’t pull out the victory. Chad Pennington threw two touchdowns going 20 of 27 for 224 yards in the first season-opening start. NYJ 31, CIN 24 Seattle Seahawks @ New Orleans Saints Shaun Alexander rushed for 135 yards on 28 carries and had a total of 3 TDs. Matt Hasselbeck went 19 for 29 with 246 yards and one touchdown. Darrell Jackson caught 7 passes for 98 yards. Joe Horn caught six passes for 110 yards, but Deuce McAllister only rushed for 57 yards on 16 carries. SEA 21, NO 7 Atlanta Falcons @ San Francisco 49ers Warrick Dunn rushed for two touchdowns, and Michael Vick was 13 of 22 for 163 yards in Jim Mora’s head coaching debut. Mora, the longtime San Francisco defensive coordinator took over the Falcons last January. Algae Crumpler caught 6 passes for 82 yards and one touchdown. ATL 21, SF 19 New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles Terrell Owens had 68 yards and three touchdown catches, Donovan McNabb threw for 330 yards and tied a career high with four TD passes and Brian Westbrook ran for 119 yards. Eli Mannning made his NFL debut in the final minutes, handing off to Tiki Barber for a 72-yard TD run on his first play. Manning finished 3 of 9 for 66 yards. PHI 31, NYG 17 Dallas Cowboys @ Minnesota Vikings Daunte Culpepper threw for 289 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes, two of them to Randy Moss. Culpepper also rushed six times for 25 yards. Vinny Testaverde was 29 of 50 for 355 yards with one touchdown. Keyshawn Johnson caught 9 passes for 111 yards. MIN 35, DAL 17 Denver Broncos @ Kansas City Chiefs Quentin Griffin ran for 156 yards and scored three touchdowns in his first game as Clinton Portis' replacement. Champ Bailey, who made his Denver debut intercepted a pass and also caught an 11 yard pass on offense. Jake Plummer threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Priest Holmes ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns. DEN 34, KC 24 Green Bay Packers @ Carolina Panthers Ahman Green rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns as the Packers defeated the defending NFC Champions on the road. Jake Delhomme passed for 262 yards in the loss. Favre moved into third place all-time with his 126th career victory, passing Fran Tarkenton.
